Bone loss in the lower leg during 35 days of bed rest is predominantly from the cortical compartment

The aim of this study was to establish whether this pattern of bone loss was a general rule during immobilization. We monitored various skeletal sites with different tissue composition during 5 weeks of immobilization. The present study therefore supports the suggestion of the subendocortical layer as a transitional zone, which can readily be transformed into trabecular bone in response to immobilization. The latter will lead to cortical thinning, a factor that has been associated with the risk of fracture and with osteoarthritis.

Respiratory muscle endurance training: effect on normoxic and hypoxic exercise performance

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of endurance respiratory muscle training on endurance performance in normoxic and hypoxic conditions. In conclusion, the aforementioned endurance respiratory muscle training protocol enhances aerobic capacity in hypoxia without a concomitant enhancement of exercise performance. Endurance respiratory muscle training does not appear to be beneficial for improving performance under normoxic conditions.

Anxiety level and different stress-coping strategies of Slovenian soldiers

The aim of the study was to determine the anxiety level, self-regulation and stress-coping strategies of the Slovenian Armed Force’s members. The participating soldiers showed low anxiety levels, high self-regulation and a tendency to cope actively with problem situations. We idenitfied, however, significant differences in some of the measured variables between military candidates, on the one hand, and other professional groups of the Slovenian Armed Forces, on the other.

Body mass index and triceps skinfold thickness in prepubertal children in Slovenia

The main aim of this study was to analyze overweight and obesity in children on the basis of body mass index and triceps skinfold thickness. The results show that triceps skinfold thickness and weight status of prepubertal children are closely related and that the criterion for the determination of weight status on the basis of body mass index is well defined.

Heavy School Bags As An Onerous Indicator Of Spinal Problems

We determined that the weight of a school bag with 11 year old pupils does not exceed 10%. With students who are one-year older, the weight of the school bag on average increases by 3.5% of a pupil's body weight, which represents a 13.2% ratio of a pupil's body weight. The cause of such an increase perhaps should be examined within the curriculum of both grades and the increase in the usage of workbooks and other materials in the seventh grade. A concern in the findings is that there is a noticeable increase in spinal problems.
