Tracing thermotolerant Campylobacter spp. in the food chain – invited lecture

Campylobacteriosis is the leading food-borne illness and most frequently reported zoonosis in humans. Additional problem is the increasing antimicrobial resistance, which is a world-wide problem, including Campylobacter transmission via food chain. The reasons and mechanisms of resistance to different antimicrobials are different and one of the main research topics of the group of the author. Invited lecture on international conference was a review of the current state-of-the-art in the field and stressed also the main research achievements of the group.

Identification of genes for biosynthesis of novel tetracycline analogs

Based on the identification of gene cluster for chelocardine biosynthesis, University of Ljubljana/Biotechnical Faculty filed patent application EP 2154249 A1. The patent protects the rights to exploit the chelocardin gene cluster for novel chelocardin analogues design using the biosynthetical and semisynthetical chemical approaches.

Improvement of biosynthetic process for production of generic products

In collaboration with pharmaceutical company Krka, we have improved fermentation process for production of generic product from group of secondary metabolites, for obesity healing. This invention relates to improved processes for the production of lipstatin and relates to microorganisms characterized by abolished or reduced activity of the BKD complex, e.g. mutated branched-chain 2-oxo acid dehydrogenase (BKD). Patent application was filed (EP2141236 (A1), WO2010000839 (A1)).
