Conference: Biotechnology and Microbiology for Future: Antimicrobial Substances

The Proceedings which were edited by the occasion of the conference dedicated to antimicrobial substances include 23 review articles or presentations of research work of different slovene groups in the field of biotechnology and microbiology – linked to antimicrobial substances. These are the sixth proceedings of the conferences, which were organized by the research group Chair of Biotechnology.

Environmental quality determines physiological behaviour of bacteria.

The aim of the contribution is to present the response of the novel red-pigmented Vibrio sp. isolated from the estuarine waters in the Northern Adriatic Sea to changes in environmental properties which have a crucial role in bacterial lives. We have shown that environmental factors modulate signal production by quorum sensing and consequently production of secondary metabolites

Tracing antimicrobial resistance in the food chain : case Campylobacter

Antimicrobial resistance is increasing in general, but also at food-related microorganisms, this is one of the most important topics in food safety area. This lecture at international congress EFFOST 2009 was a review of the state-of-the art in the field of most prevalent food-borne pathogenic bacteria - Campylobacter.

Environmental influences on growth of food microorganisms.Food-borne pathogenic bacteria. Safety management in food processing.

The work is represented by four key chapters in a university study book of medical microbiology, field of food microbiology. It is a contribution to transfer current knowledge in the field of food safety to university study programs which are held in most Balkan countries (area of ex-common state).

Krka award for special research achievements

U. Lešnik gained a special Krka Prize in 2009 for her PhD thesis entitled »Cloning of genes for the biosynthesis of tetracyclines from selected bacteria of Actinomycelates genus”. Within her thesis she cloned and characterized the gene cluster for the tetracycline antibiotic chelocardin. By in silico analysis she predicted putative gene functions of the cluster and deduced the biosynthetic pathway on their basis. Understanding the biosynthesis of chelocardin represents new opportunities for tetracycline analogs design by biosynthetic engineering.
