Method for isolation and selection of bacterial strains, bacterial strains, and method for their use

The present invention provides a method of isolation and selection of new Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains from bioptic specimens of human intestinal mucosa. The strains were selected on the basis of susceptibility to antimicrobials, ability to survive in simulated conditions of the gastrointestinal environment and to exhibit anti-inflammatory activity. The bases of this invention are also the whole-genome sequences of the Lactobacillus fermentum L930BB and Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. animalis IM386. The invention relates the use of any of these two strains or a combination of both for the manufacture of probiotic as pharmaceutical product, in particular for prevention and/or treatment of functional gastrointestinal disturbances and illnesses in region of the lower intestinal tract, such as IBS or IBD (Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis). Pharmaceutical company Medis from Ljubljana, applicant of this patent, is already testing the probiotic preparation containing strain from this application on animal models and in a clinical study on patients with intestinal bowel syndrome.

Process of transformation of waste beer yeast into biogas

In this patent, we have developed an innovative process of transformation of waste beer yeast into biogas in a UASB-type bioreactor. UASB bioreactors usually metabolise only dissolved organic substances, but our innovative process allows the addition of up to 3% of waste yeast into brewery waste water, which increases the production of biogas by an average of 40%. Laško, who is the owner of the patent, produces so much heat from the biogas that covers 60% of the heat demand in the production of beer .The process has been tested at laboratory, pilot and industrial scale. In the development of the process were used traditional engineering and new microbial-biotechnological approaches, where we have applied the expertise from the field of anaerobic microorganisms.

Probiotic bacteria and enteric infections

Intestinal disorders can result from pathogens like bacteria, fungi, parasites and viruses, but the causes remain to be elucidated. Disturbances to the normal gut flora are central to the development of many, if not all, of these disorders. Disturbed gut microbiota is a prelude to public health issues like traveller’s diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, and colorectal cancers. This book discusses the way intestinal disorders affect the microbiota, how the disturbed microbiotal balance leads to enteric disorders and the ways to prevent these disorders

What is a good quality probiotic

Quality control of probiotic products in the EU is insufficiently regulated. Demand for the analysis of probiotics and the lack of laboratories authorized for this type of analysis encouraged us that we started in 2010 with the procedures of accreditation of methods for the analysis of probiotics. In October 2010, the Institute of Dairy Science and Probiotics gained accreditation certificate for the enumeration of probiotic microorganisms of the genera Bifidobacterium ( ISO 29981/IDF220 : 2010) , Lactobacillus , Enterococcus and Lactobacillus acidophilus from the group ( ISO 192:2006 20128/IDF ) in probiotic products by plate counting. In April 2013 the list of accredited methods has expanded to enumeration of Streptococcus thermophilus in probiotic products by plate counting, and to the confirmation of the presence of certain species of probiotic microorganisms by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Thus, the conditions for the marketing of such analyzes in the EU area were created. This issue is presented in a proceedings of professional papers.
