Comparison of mycelial proteomes of two Verticillium albo-atrum pathotypes from hop.

We studied mild and lethal pathotypes of hop Verticillium albo-atrum from two geographic origins. A 2-D CBB gels showed up to 650 spots. A total of 27 and 30 spots were found differentially expressed between the pathotypes, which were analyzed by tandem mass spectrometry. The lethal pathotypes showed increased expression of peroxiredoxine and ascorbate peroxidase, a higher level of cytoskeleton components and regulators, and a higher rate of protein synthesis and energy metabolism. These results reveal differences in protein expression level and are discussed in relation to virulence.

Isolation and sequence analysis of NBS-LRR disease resistance gene analogues from hop Humulus lupulus L.

The aim of this study was analysis of the genes, which are involved in the pathogenesis related pathway in hop. PCR strategy was employed for isolation of resistance gene analogues (RGA) with degenerate primers approach. These primers are constructed in the conserved regions of RGA genes. Obtained sequences were characterized in details and specific primer pairs were developed. Two loci were mapped in hop segregation family as well.

Identification of QTLs for alpha acid content and yield in hop (Humulus lupulus L.).

The map locations and effects of QTLs were estimated for alpha-acid content and yield traits in hop. The mapping population consisted of 111 progeny segregating quantitatively for alpha-acid and yield in 2002-2006. A total of 13 putative QTLs for alpha acid content, 13 for dry cone weight and 18 for harvest index were identified on the two maps across years The most promising QTL for alpha acid content was identified on LG03 flanked by two AFLP markers. The QTLs identified represent the first step towards marker-assisted breeding for high alpha content and hop yield.

Morphological development and nutritive value of herbage in five temperate grass species during primary growth: analysis of time dynamics

The paper shows a pattern and gives an analysis of differences in morphological development and nutritive value of herbage in Meadow foxtail, Tall oatgrass, Cocksfoot, Perennial ryegrass and Yorkshire fog during primary growth. The grasses, grown in the pre-Alpine region of Slovenia, exhibit typical time-related morphological development and patterns of concentrations of crude protein, neutral- and acid-detergent fibres and digestibility of herbage dry matter. The research findings may contribute to more sustainable and cost effective grassland management.

Identification of a phytoplasma from the aster yellows group infecting purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) in Slovenia

Since 2002, phytoplasma-like symptoms have been observed in purple coneflower in several gardens in the Savinja valley in Slovenia. The symptoms seen include plant weakness, leaf yellowing, and floral malformations particularly virescence and phyllody. Based of PCR molecular analysis and sequencing of DNA products phytoplasma of the aster yellows group (AY) have been identified as casual agent.
