Critical discourse analysis of the European agricultural policy

A critical discourse analysis of two EU agricultural commissioners’ speeches in the period 2000–2006 was carried out and substantiated by rational choice theory. The analysis reveals how the reforms have been gradually overturning prevailing CAP discourses. The neo-mercantilism discourse has been replaced by the discourse of multifunctionality. The legitimisation of the CAP with environmental and rural public goods has been replaced by less well-articulated arguments of ‘quality production’ and ‘competitiveness’, implying a gradual move to a neoliberal orientation for the future CAP.

Optimisation of dairy cow nutrion with weighted goal programming and penalty function

The paper presents spreadsheet tool for the formulation of a daily dairy cow ration. The first sub-model is common linear programming model and the second one is based on weighted-goal programming approach supported with a penalty function. With combination of both approaches it is intended to find least cost daily ration, considering up-to-date requirements of high yielding dairy cows. Simultaneously it is possible to consider economical (efficiency) and nutritional (allowing for adjustment to feed available and nutrition requirements of the animals) aspects in practical milk production.

Social farming in Europe

Monograph opens a window into a phenomenon of interlacing agriculture and social/health care that has been an under-recognised application of multifunctional agriculture. Farmers can actively contribute to improve healthcare services and to support rural everyday life. There is evidence about the therapeutics effect for less empowered people involved in social farming.
