Background for recon-structuring of Slovenian wood processing industry

Wood is the most important natural renewable raw material in Slovenia. For many years (centuries) we know how to add value to this material, and particularly in the period after World War II woodworking industry was highly developed and was one of the most important industries in the country. In recent years, the wood processing industry is experiencing difficulties. There are several reasons for this. The most important are an appreciation of the Slovenian currency (wood processing industry is a prominent exporter), rising of the raw material prices, labour intensity, the closure of the development departments in the nineties in the industry ... However, we believe that the timber industry needed restructuring and there are several opportunities for regrowth: domestic raw materials, experience, knowledge, proximity of the developed markets and capacity in the industry. Within this project, forces of all stakeholders were joined, in order to prepare the best possible platform for the restructuring of the wood processing industry. We have prepared a strategy of restructuring the timber industry and the project members were actively involved in preparing the Action Plan as well.

Dating of prehistoric pile dwellings which denote the end of coper age and the edn of settlement at Ljubljansko barje, Slovenia

Investigations of wood from four settlements at Ljubljansko barje enabled us to date Založnica and Črni graben. The age of Dušanovo was estimated based on other artefacts. The settlements lived at the end of copper age. The results will improve our knowledge on settlement at Ljubljansko barje and in wider surroundings at that time. The results are of great international interest because Ljubljansko barje settlements are on the UNESCO list of cultural heritage. The results also represent a challenge to re-evaluate the dating of numerous settlements from the wider Danube area.
