P3-0360 — Annual report 2010
1.
Golnik symposium of pneumology and allergology with international participation, Golnik, Bled, September 30– October 2, 2010.

To present the progress of Slovenian pneumology and allergology in the past few years. To compare the development and situation in these fields in Slovenia to other countries with similar health care systems. Slovenian speakers and European invited speakers can regularly report about new and proven scientific methods. To transmit experience and knowledge to general practitioners and specialists from Southeastern Europe. To improve their work, accept new organizations, implement and adopt new diagnostic and therapeutic methods in their daily work with patients.

The prevalence and severity of asthma in Slovenian adult population

In the first part we used questionnaires (N = 687) which were followed by a pulmonary specialist clinical examination in selected subjects (N = 185). In the second part we used supplementary questionnaires for prevalence estimations (N = 1145). We found a high prevalence of asthma in the Slovenian population (16,3%). Further epidemiological studies are underway to confirm these data.

3.
Development of new diagnostic and research methods and procedures

We developed and implemented a diagnostic method for measuring basophil specific allergen sensitivity by flow cytometry. This method is used for predicting systemic side effects of venom immunotherapy and for monitoring of the efficiency of venom immunotherapy. The method is widely internationally recognized.

Managing and coordination of a National Quality Scheme for Allergy Diagnostics – IgEQAS

The Head of a National Quality Assessment Scheme for measurements of IgE antibodies – IgEQAS within the Slovenian National External Quality Assessment Scheme – SNEQAS. In this national quality scheme, all Slovenian laboratories (N = 16) which perform measurements of specific and/or total IgEs are included. We provide 4 samples per year; every sample for 3 allergens and a total IgE.

5.
Basophil sensitivity as predictive factor of adverse reactions and efficacy of Hymenoptera venom immunotherapy

The aim was to show the applicability of the basophil activation test (BAT) in the detection of hypersensitivity to Hymenoptera venom. Our aim was also to evaluate whether there is any correlation between basophil in vitro sensitivity to allergen-specific stimulation and the efficacy of venom immunotherapy (VIT). Our results revealed a higher clinical sensitivity and better clinical positive predictive value of BAT compared to SPT and sIgE test in the detection of Hymenoptera venom allergy. BAT is particularly helpful in cases with negative or contradictory results of confirmatory tests.
