Aging impairs collateral sprouting of nociceptive axons in the rat

Younger rats displayed more extensive skin sensory axon collateral sprouting into the end-to-side nerve anastomosis than old rats. Age-related differences in collateral sprouting are primarily due to age-dependent alterations in degenerating neural paths, and are less attributable to reduced capacity of sensory neurons to sprout or to reduced responsiveness to growth factors. Accordingly, we found reduced quantities of laminin in the old rat peripheral nerves compared to young animals.

Tremor amplitude and frequency variability in Parkinson's disease is dependent on activity and synchronisation of central oscillators in basal ganglia

Paper proposes a central mechanism of tremor generation in the brain, based on the cell-oscillators in the basal ganglia. Our hypothesis poses that tremor amplitude is directly related to the activity and synchronisation of central oscillators in basal ganglia and inversely related to the variability of tremor frequency. Tis is based on the results of amplitude and frequency measurements of tremor in Parkinson disease patients before and after administration of medication. The proposed mechanism of tremor presents the basis for new treatment development for Parkinson disease tremor.

Autonomic dysfunction in presymptomatic and early symptomatic Huntington's disease

Paper addresses autonomic nervous system disfunction in presymptomatic and early symptomatic Huntington disease patients. Employing different cardiovascular tests of autonomic nervous function in 14 presymptomatic and 11 early symptomatic Huntington disease patients and a control group we found a reduced response to a mental arythmetic test and an increased response to cold-water arm submersion test, thus revealing an early autonomic disfunction in these patients.

Anti-NGF treatment reduces bone resorption in periodontitis

Study results show that the increased NGF levels in the inflamed rat gingiva contribute to bone destruction in experimental periodontitis. Systemic administration of antibodies to NGF significantly reduced gingival inflammation and bone resorption.
