Amniotic membrane in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine

We describe the properties of amniotic membrane, which has low immunogenicity, anti-microbial, anti-fibrosis, anti-scarring, as well as reasonable mechanical properties and epithelialization stimulating effects. Amniotic membrane is also the source of stem cells, which like the embryonic stem cells are pluripotent, but not tumorogenic. These various properties render the amniotic membrane a suitable source of cells or matrix for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

The use of chitosan in basic studies and clinical application in urinary bladder epithelium

Chitosan is a cationic polysaccharide mainly used for local application of drugs. The positive charges of the chitosan enable it to attach to the negative charged surface of cells and allow a gradual release of the drugs. The application on urinary bladder revealed a deteriorating effect on epithelial cells. Such local and well controllable effect enable the use of chitosan in basic studies of urothelial regeneration and the possibility of treatment of cystitis caused by intracellular parasites (E. coli).

Cell cultures and tissues

This chapter in a monograph entitled “The experimental animals” presents the importance of growing cells and tissues in culture. Some animal testing may already be fully replaced by the use of cell and tissue cultures. We presented the advantages and disadvantages of different types of cultures, as well as how to prepare different types of cultures to carry out scientific research, diagnostic or educational work.

Novelties in surgical treatment of hereditary urologic disorders

This overview presents the surgical methods, which have been recently applied in world as well as in Slovenia, for treatment of hereditary defects of urinary tract in children. The paper may serve as additional literature for students of medicine and other medical profiles.

Biosynthesis and endocytotic origin of fusiform vesicles in umbrella cells

The current progres in investigations of fusiform vesicle traffic was presented. It was shown that the majority of mature fusiform vesicle originate from biosynthetic pathway, while only some fusiform vesicles arise during endocytosis of the apical plasma membrane.
