Functional differentiation of urothelial cells

Latest results on urothelial differentiation were presented. It was described how Golgi rearrangements enable assembly of urothelial plaques from 16-nm uroplakin particles, which lead to the formation of functional permeability barrier of superficial urothelial cells. It was further shown, how endocytosis contributes to the maturation of the apical plasma membrane and mechanisms that inhibit endocytosis in terminally differentiated urothelial cells.

Biosinthetic pathway of apical plasma membrane in the urothelium

The aim of doctoral thesis was study of formation and vesicular traffic of asymmetric unit membrane during normal urothelial differentiation and during regeneration after damage. New methods of immuno-electron microscopy and electron tomography were introduced. The main result of this work was presentation of integral model of biosynthetic pathways in urothelial cells.

Tight junctions in the body

The overview gives a detailed survey about the proteins associated with tight junctions, their structure and functions. We summarized our knowledge about tight junction proteins and their involvement in some diseases. The article is meant as a literature for graduate and postgraduate students.

5.
Autophagy

The work is a survey of our own and current knowledge on autophagy, a catabolic process of the degradation of cellular components. The connections between autophagic malfunctioning and many human diseases are explained. The article is supplementary literature for students of different study programmes.
