Identification of some ashtma candidate genes associated with the ashtma phenotype and with the response to treatment in children with asthma

We studied 111 Slovenian children aged between 5 and 18 years with mild or moderate persistent asthma; 81 of them were atopic and 30 had non-atopic asthma. In non-atopic asthmatics the frequency of CCR5-delta32 allele was 1.7%, which is significantly less than 10.1% in the control group (p=0.03) and the frequency of IL4RA Arg551 allele was 6.7%, which is also significantly less than 21.9% in the control group (p(0.01). Asthmatics carrying IL4RA Arg551 allele had more severe asthma with a mean FEV1 of 85.7% of predicted, compared to 92.9% in asthmatics carrying IL4RA Gln551 allele (p=0.02).
