Editorial board of an international journal ‘’Stereology and Image Analysis’’

Since 2000 Ida Eržen holds the position of the Editor in Chief of the international journal "Image Analysis & Stereology" which is the official journal of the International Stereological Society. The journal is interdisciplinary and has open access at http://www.iasiss. org. The journal is indexed by some most important databases, i.e. INSPEC, METADEX, Mathematical Reviews, MathSci NET, SCOPUS and Current Index to Statistics, Science Citation Index Expanded (also known as SciSearch®), Journal Citation Reports/Science Edition and Current Contents®/Engineering Computing and Technology. In 2013 the journal received impact factor 0,639.

Anatomy

Practically all researchers of the group are involved in teaching graduate and postgraduate students of medicine, dental medicine, pharmacy, nursery and biochemistry. These activities include writing textbooks. Members of the group, prof. Erika Cvetko and doc. dr. Marija Meznarič published ''Glava, vrat, osrednje živčevje in čutila : navodila za vaje za predmet Anatomija 2'', prof. dr. Erika Cvetko was coauthor učnega gradiva ''Anatomske slike : študijsko gradivo za študente Fakultete za šport''.

Influence of glucocorticoids on sugammadex action: the effect at the cellular and mollecular level and clinical significance

In this doctoral thesis we combined laboratory research with clinical investigations. In vitro model of human skeletal muscle and clinical study were employed with the aim to determine the interaction between dexamethasone and sugammadex. In in vitro model of functionally innervated human muscle cells sugammadex reversed rocuronium-induced neuromuscular block; however, concomitant addition of high dexamethasone concentration diminished the efficiency of sugammadex. Moreover, dexamethasone impaired functional innervation and affected myokine IL-6 secretion; both these effects were attenuated by concomitant application of sugammadex. Although the effects of dexamethasone on sugammadex action were evident under the in vitro conditions, we failed to observe such interactions in vivo where pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics are subjected to numerous systemic factors. In conclusion, we believe that interactions between sugammadex and glucocorticoids, which are often part of the therapy of patients receiving neuromuscular blockde at the operations are possible, though apparently clinically irrelevant. Suprvisor of the doctorial thesis was a member of the progarm, prof. Tomaž Marš, M.D., Ph. D.

Estimation of anemia by use of skeletal muscle near-infrared spectroscopy

Prešeren Award for students research work in 2013. Supervisor as a head of the program group: prof. Matej Podbregar, M.D., Ph. D. Skeletal muscle tissue oxygenation and tissue hemoglobin values were estimated by use of near-infrared spectroscopy. The study showed that the age of transfued erythrocytes influences the tissue oxygenation.
