Low-loss semi-reflective in-fiber mirrors

Paper presents a method for production of all-fiber semi reflective mirrors, that could be used for interferometric fiber sensors and other photonic devices. The mirrors produced by surface micromachining of standard single mode optical fiber tip followed by an on-line feedback-assisted fusion splicing process. Fiber mirror reflectance up to 9.5%with excess losses below 0.25 dB were produced.

High-resolution spectrally-resolved fiber optic sensor interrogation system based on a standard DWDM laser module.

Article describes interrogation system for optical sensors, based on standard telecommunication DWDM laser module which includes DFB laser diode and wavelength locker. System has interrogation spectral width over 2 nm and resolution of 1 pm and is, therefore, suitable for interrogation of all-fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer and Bragg gratings based sensors. Experimental results were presented for Bragg gratings strain sensor which has resolution 1 µ? and for all-fiber Fabry-Perot temperature sensor which has resolution 0.1 °C.

Nintendo Wii remote controller in higher education : development and evaluation of a demonstrator kit for e-teaching

Current market surveys showed surprisingly that the Wii remote controller (Wiimote) is more wide spread than standard Tablet PCs and is the most used computer input device worldwide, which, given its collection of sensors, accelerometers and Bluetooth technology, makes it of great interest for HCI experiments in the area of e-Learning and e-Teaching. In this paper we discuss the importance of gestures for teaching and describe the design and development of a low-cost demonstrator kit for the Wiimote in order to demonstrate that gestures can enhance the quality of the lecturing process.

Improving multimodal web accessibility for deaf people: sign language interpreter module

The paper describe design and development of the sign language interpreter module for embedding of selective interactive elements into the original text on appropriate web pages. Thus, the system significantly simplifies the expansion and availability of additional functions to Web developers, as it preserves the original Web page with the addition of a Web layer of sign language video. The quantitative and qualitative evaluation demonstrated that information presented with a transparent sign language video increases the users' interest in the content of materials.

Single piece Fabry-Perot optical sensor and method of manufacturing the same

An optical sensor and a method of manufacturing such as sensor are provided. The sensor includes a lead optical fiber with a single piece optical element joined permanently joined to its forward end. The optical element defines a spacer with a cavity therein at one end, and a diaphragm at the opposite end. The diaphragm is flexible in response to a parameter and the sensor defines a sensing Fabry-Perot resonator.
