Adaptive underfrequency load shedding schemes in modern power systems

Main contribution of Ph.D. thesis is the analysis of existing underfrequency load shedding schemes and according to this a suggestion of adaptive methodology and algorithm, that reflects best possible operation regarding the amount of disconnected load. In the thesis two such suggestions are given. Both of them assume that modern communication technologies are used for data transfer within the power system under question. First suggestion is based on monitoring the first time derivative of a frequency of center of inertia, whereas the second on monitoring the second time derivative of the same frequency. The latter enables prediction of power system frequency response and consequently lowers the amount of disconnected load. Operation of both methodologies has been tested on several power system models, which includes both study test systems as well as models of real power systems. The thesis has been awarded with Bedjanič prize.

Time-optimal current control of static compensator

An advanced control algorithm for the optimal control of the static compensator is the main subject and scientific contribution of the dissertation of Ambrož Božiček. The control algorithm is developed based on detailed knowledge of the voltage sourced converter. Performance optimization, which is an advantage over others already known predictive control algorithms, is based on the mathematical modelling of the device and prediction of variations of the reference system parameters.
