High-pressure cooling assistance in machining of hard-to-machine materials

This doctoral thesis deals with high-pressure cooling (HPC) in turning. The hybrid process is one of the methods how to improve machinability of hard-to-machine materials. The technology is brought into the laboratory environment. The main process parameters are recognized and their influences on machining performance of advanced materials are found. Modeling of relations between process parameters and output features is developed in form of empirical models. Based on economic model, the justification of HPC machining of advanced materials using coated carbide tools is proven.

Manufacturing of modern medical implants with classical machining process and LENS technology

In this master work the construction and development process of modern medical implants (MI) is presented. As an example of MI the intramedular nail (IM nail) is chosen. IM nail prototypes had been manufactured with conventional machining and with modern LENS technology, which enables manufacture of hollow, thin walled products with complex design, usage of gradient materials and repair possibility. Because modern medical implants are made of biomaterials (Ti-alloy) which is classified as material hard to machine, the machinability of this alloy was tested and recommendation given.

Sustainability spirit in manufacturing/machining processes.

The paper presents methods for achieving production sustainability on a machining technology level. In order to tackle the sustainability issues, the paper promotes sustainable production via the improvement of machining technologies that have a high potential to cut costs and improve competitiveness by reducing resource consumption and thus creating less waste. The idea is confirmed by a case study on the implementation and sustainability evaluation of innovative cryogenic and high pressure jet assisted machining processes in comparison to conventional machining process.

Experimental analysis of sustainability in machining of Inconel 718.

In this work, sustainability in machining processes is under the scope. Two sustainable alternatives are evaluated: cryogenic machining and high pressure assisted machining in comparison to conventional machining. The sustainability performance measures refer to environmental impact, energy consumption, safety, personal health, waste management and costs. The sustainability evaluation is supported with machining experiments on Ni-alloy (Inconel 718). It is shown that alternatives offer a cost-effective route to improve the economic, environmental and social performance.

Point data pre-processing based on fuzzy logic for reverse engineering modelling.

State of the art 3D-digitization systems designed for reverse engineering (RE)modelling are characterized by increased scanning speed and also by the possibility to generate a large number of points in a short time. Generally, this improves the efficiency of the RE-modelling process. In addition, the 3D-digitization process is often connected with measuring errors because of the properties of measuring systems and/or the object. This paper introduces a pre-processing system based on fuzzy logic, along with the results of its practical application.
