Concepts, ontologies, and knowledge representation

Recording knowledge in a common framework that would make it possible to share global knowledge remains an important challenge for researchers. This book examines several ideas about the representation of knowledge addressing this challenge. A widespread general agreement is followed that states uniform knowledge representation should be achievable by using ontologies populated with concepts. The main use of recorded knowledge by software agents is to support intelligent behavior essential for solving problems. An example of a system which makes use of knowledge representation are dialog systems, which support the human-computer interaction.

Inhomogeneity correction and fat-tissue extraction in MR images of FacioScapuloHumeral muscular Dystrophy

An automated algorithm for the fat- and muscle-tissue delineation in the Magnetic Resonance Image data of the patient’s leg with FacioScapuloHumeral muscular Dystrophy has been developed. The algorithm corrects the tissue inhomogeneity with a novel method that produces good results with low computation time and complexity.

Characterization of spatiotemporal changes for the classification of dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic-resonance breast lesions

The early detection of breast cancer is one of the most important predictors in determining the prognosis for women with malignant tumours. Dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic-resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) is an important imaging modality for detecting and interpreting the different breast lesions that momentarily still exhibits a high rate of false positive results. We have developed an improved method by introducing new features to those of the grey-level co-occurrence matrix, significantly increased the differentiation between the malignant and the benign breast lesions, thus resulting in a high sensitivity and improved specificity.

Auditory and head-up displays in vehicles

This paper investigates the efficiency of single and multimodal user interfaces for in-vehicle control and information systems and their impact on driving safety. A windshield projection (HUD) of a hierarchical list-based visual menu was compared to an auditory representation of the same menu and to a combination of both representations. The study shows that the single modality auditory interface is the least efficient representation of the menu; the multimodal audio-visual interface, however, shows a strong tendency to be superior to both the auditory and visual single modality interfaces with regards to driver distraction and efficiency.

Method for providing quality of service in a multiuser orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) system

The invention is a method for quality of experience (QoE) assurance in multiuser mobile and wireless OFDM communications systems. The technical challenge solved with this method is optimized QoE assurance by means of dynamic allocation of available resources on transmission unit to all users of the mobile or wireless OFDM communications system. A method is proposed for dynamic subcarrier and power allocation that assures an appropriate QoE level while maximizing multiuser OFMD system throughput.
