Relationship between microstructure, cytotoxicity and corrosion properties of a Cu-Al-Ni shape memory alloy

Cu–Al–Ni shape memory alloys (SMAs) have been investigated as materials for medical devices, but their biomedical application is still limited. The aim of this work was to compare the microstructure, corrosion and cytotoxicity in vitro of a Cu–Al–Ni SMA. Rapidly solidified (RS) thin ribbons, manufactured via melt spinning, were used for the tests. The control alloy was a permanent mould casting of the same composition, but without shape memory effect.

Biologically inspired porous cooling membrane using arrayed-droplets evaporation

Inspired by human skin that dissipates heat via sweat-droplet evaporation on the skin, we propose an evaporative cooling technique via arrayed-droplets on a porous membrane, construct an analytical model of the evaporative cooling including interactions among the large number of droplets, and extensively analyze the cooling performance of 1000-droplet array. Our model shows that heat dissipation is enhanced by the membrane with dense droplets. Additionally, the model predicts that the membrane dissipates heat more efficiently by operating at a higher temperature.

Characterization of the carbides and the martensite phase in powder-metallurgy high-speed steel

A microstructural characterization of the powder-metallurgy high-speed-steel S390 Microclean was performed based on an elemental distribution of the carbide phase as well as crystallographic analyses. The results showed that there were two types of carbides present: vanadium-rich carbides, which were not chemically homogeneous and exhibited a tungsten-enriched or tungsten-depleted central area; and chemically homogeneous tungsten-rich M6C-type carbides

Optimisation of the properties of siloxane coatings as antibiofouling coatings : comparison of PACVD and hybrid PACVD-PVD coatings

Plasma-assisted chemical vapour deposition (PACVD) siloxane coatings from a mixture of hexamethyldisiloxane (HMDSO) and O-2, and hybrid coatings deposited by simultaneous sputtering of silicon and plasma polymerisation of HMDSO + O-2 were prepared on glass and steel substrates. The effect of the addition of sputtered silicon was investigated for coatings with different HMDSO/O-2 ratios. The microstructure and composition of coatings were affected by the coating parameters used.

Dielectric, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and electrostrictive properties of K[sub](0.5)Na[sub](0.5)NbO[sub]3 single crystals

The dielectric, ferroelectric, piezoelectric, and electrostrictive properties of K0.5Na0.5NbO3 single crystals (KNN s.c.) prepared by solid-state crystal growth are reported. The dielectric constant (epsilon), dielectric losses (tan delta), remanent polarization (P-r), and coercive field (E-c) for KNN s.c. in the [1(3) over bar 1] direction at room temperature are 1015, 1%, 17 mu C/cm(2), and 24 kV/cm, respectively.
