Orientation-dependent ion beam sputtering at normal incidence conditions in FeSiAl alloy.

The authors have performed Ar+ broad ion beam sputtering of a polycrystalline Fe-Si-Al alloy at normal incidence at energies varying from 6 to 10 keV. Sputtering results in the formation of etch pits, which can be classified in three shapes: triangular, and square. As each grain of individual orientation exhibits a certain type of pattern, the etch pits were correlated with the crystal orientations by electron backscattered diffraction technique.

Fracture of polycrystalline Fe-2.3%V-0.12%P alloy

Fracture experiments on a polycrystalline Fe-2.3mass%V-0.12mass%P alloy show that the fracture mode is directly related to the grain boundary segregation of phosphorus. Comparison of the experimental data with theoretical simulations showed that intergranular fracture spreads along those grain boundaries, which contain more than 17 at.% of segregated phosphorus.

Density functional theory study of selenium adsorption on Fe(1 1 0)

The adsorption of atomic Se on a Fe(1 1 0) surface is examined using the density functional theory (DFT). Selenium is adsorbed in high-symmetry adsorption sites: the -short and long-bridge, and atop sites at 1/2, 1/4, and 1 monolayer (ML) coverages. The long bridge (LB) site is found to be the most stable, followed by the short bridge (SB) and top sites (T).

Structuring polycrystalline Fe-Si-Al steel surfaces by means of ion beam - the role of grain orientation.

Fe-Si-Al alloy surfaces were subjected to Ar+ ion beam irradiation at 10 keV beam energy and off-normal sputtering conditions. The morphologies present were visualized by SEM and can be roughly divided into four classes: ripples oriented parallel to the ion beam direction, ripples oriented perpendicular to ion beam direction, smooth surfaces and rough faceted surfaces. EDS results show that individual grains are compositionally homogebeous, therefore, the different patterns originate from differences in crystal orientations.

Micrometer-sized specimen preparation based on ion slicing technique

The ion slicing technique has been well known for producing samples for transmission electron microscopy (TEM) investigations. It will be shown that this method can also be used for producing different types of samples for micro-mechanical experiments.
