Exhibition preparation/organisation

The photographic exhibition “Sea and Salt” with programme group members as authors was organised to celebrate the International Year of Planet Earth (2008-2009). The photographs present the richness of the marine environment from the middle of the Bay of Piran to the salt pans of Sečovlje Salina Nature Park including salt basins, salt crystals and “petola” with characteristic microorganisms. Opening of the exhibition on World Ocean Day (8 June 2009) was accompanied by lectures presenting marine environment.

SAME11 - Symposium on Aquatic Microbial Ecology

MBP organized the SAME11 in Piran, from August 30 to September 4, 2009. The programme consisted of ten sessions focused on Microbes in microbial biogeochemical cycles, Organic matter transformation, Sediment microbiology, Operational taxonomic units in microbial ecology, Climate change and aquatic microbes, Microbial interactions and communication, Viral Ecology and Modeling. 210 participants from 30 countries attended. Abstract book was published and abstracts were available also at the web page and as CD format. Selected papers will appear in special issue of Aquatic Microbial Ecology.

Editor Scientific journal

Programme group researchers are editor in chief and editor of scientific journal with international editorial board Annales Ser. Hist. Naturalis and from 2009 on editorial board has its seat at the Marine Biology Station. A series of scientific articles on jellyfish resulting from international collaboration supported by US NSF and ONR, Ministries of Science of Argentina and Croatia and Slovenian Research Agency was published in 2009 as supplement to 2nd issue of Annales.

Expert evaluation of transboundary impacts of the LNG terminals

Programme group researchers prepared expert evaluation of potential impacts of LNG terminals on marine environment planned on Italian side of the Gulf of Trieste. In addition, V. Malačič, acting as expert, was giving support to government as a member of the Governmental Commission for evaluation of LNG terminals in the Gulf of Trieste.

Circulation and environmental conditions in the Koper Bay and Port of Koper

Programme group researchers have prepared a comprehensive report as a background material for the State Spatial Plan and the Environmental Assessment of the Port of Koper. Report includes circulation characteristics of the Bay of Koper and environmental status of marine system in the Port of Koper. Data and analysis of currents, temperature, salinity, contamination of sediments with different inorganic and organic pollutants are presented as well as evaluation of pollution impacts using biomonitoring of test organism (mussel).
