Participation in EU FP 6 project EUR-INTAFAR ("Inhibition of new targets for fighting antibiotic resistance") (2005-2010).

EU project INTAFAR, in which the programme team participated in the period 2005-2010 was successfully finished in 2010. The aim of the project was better understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of bacterial cell morphogenesis and peptidoglycan biosynthesis. On this basis, new potential antibacterial compounds were designed and synthesised. Total project budget: 11.4 million Euro.

Participation in FP7 EU Project MAREX

In 2010 the programme team started with a 4-year FP7 EU colaborative project Exploring Marine Resources for Bioactive Compounds: From Discovery to Sustainable Production and Industrial Applications (MAREX) in which the programme leader acts as coordinator at partner institution UL - Faculty of Pharmacy. Further 18 partners from 11 EU and other countries will colaborate in a project . Total project budget: 6.0 million Euro.

European patent application for 8-hydroxyquinolones as inhibitors of cathepsin B

Nitroxoline and similar sompounds were protected by European patent application as cathepsin B inhibitors with potential of cancer treatment.

Three completed PhDs in the programme group in 2010

During 2010 three graduate students in the programme team successfully finished their doctoral studies with PhD diploma. All of them remain employed at University of Ljubljana, Faculty of Pharmacy where they continue their research and teaching career-

Plenary lecture

The programme group leader D. Kikelj had an invited plenary lecture entitled ''Toward multitarget antithrombotic drugs'' at 14th Hellenic Symposium on Medicinal Chemistry, 23-25 April, 2010, Thessaloniki, Greece.
