Heavy metal contamination of soils and crops in tertiary basins : a case study of Kočani field, Macedonia

Contamination of soils and crops with heavy metals is widespread and induces a long-term risk to ecosystem health. This research focuses on the heavy metal contamination of the paddy soils and crops from Kočani Field (Republic of Macedonia) originating from irrigation of the paddy fields by riverine water impacted by past and present base-metal mining activities and acid mine drainage.

Deterioration phenomena on stone monuments: insights from some Slovenian monuments

A detailed investigation of stone monuments makes an important contribution to damage diagnosis on stone monuments. The talk included presentation of properties of a stones, which were used in the construction of some important monuments in Ljubljana. Furthermore, some weathering forms of the natural stones and their couses were presented.

Evaluation of limestones with respect to the influence of environmental factors on their deterioraton

This study deals with the characterization of two Slovenian limestones, which have been most frequently used in the construction of Slovenian historical monuments as well as modern buildings. The results indicated that the precipitation of soluble salts had significantly contributed to the severe observed deterioration of the selected limestones.

Minerals from lead and zinc mine Mežica

The biggest mine of lead and zinc in Slovenia lies in the eastern area of Karavanke mountains. Ore bodies are concentrated in the 64 km2 area eastern from hill Peca. Mineral paragenesis of the Mežica area comprises around 30 minerals.

Geochemical characteristics of tailing material from Sasa mine (Macedonia): a preliminary study

This preliminary research focuses on the mineralogical characteristics and heavy metal contents of the tailings material deposited close to Pb-Zn Sasa Mine in the Osogovo Mountains (eastern Macedonia). The mineral composition of Sasa Mine tailing material is mostly represented by quartz, pyrite, galena, sphalerite and magnetite. The calculated pollution index of tailings material was higher 15, indicating that tailings material from Sasa Mine represents a high environmental risk for surrounding ecosystems.
