Critical behavior of director fluctuations in suspensions of ferroelectric nanoparticles in liquid crystals at the nematic to smectic-A phase transition

Temperature dependence of the nematic fluctuations in suspensions of barium titanate in 8CB were measured. Due to competing influence of internal electric field and impurities the isotropic-nematic transition slightly decreases, while transition to the smectic phase does not change. The critical behavior of the smectic correlation length is different than in pure 8CB.

Liponucleoside thin films

We performed a comparative study of self-assembling properties of liponucleoside materials containing different nucleobases in their hydrophilic headgroups, but possessing the same type of lipophilic moiety in their hydrophobic tails. Surface pressure versus area isotherms ([pi](A)) of monolayers formed at the air-water interface show that guanine-based materials form stable monolayer films exhibiting a profound first order phase transition from the liquid expanded to the condensed phase. Materials based on other nucleobases form less stable films exhibiting a liquid-like behaviour. Analysis of surface structures of Langmuir films with Brewster angle microscopy (BAM) and of Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films deposited on mica surface by atomic force microscopy (AFM) confirms surface organization as resolved from the isotherms.

Photocoagulation of dermal blood vessels with multiple laser pulses in an in vivo microvascular model

On an animal model we demonstrated increased efficiency and safety of an innovative protocol of vascular therapy with repetitive laser pulse irradiation, as we have predicted with numerical modelling.

Rapid prototyping system with sub-micrometer resolution for microfluidic applications

We report on a maskless lithography rapid prototyping system for fabrication of microfluidic circuits with sub-micrometer resolution. The micropatterning system uses the laser direct imaging technique with a focused ultraviolet laser beam and an acousto-optic deflector to steer the beam in two dimensions. The use of an acousto-optic deflector results in high patterning speeds. The system provides an alternative to existing photolithography techniques and is especially suitable for rapid prototyping.

Holographic gratings for slow-neutron optics

We summarize the properties of gratings recorded in deuterated (poly)methylmethacrylate, holographic polymer-dispersed liquid crystals and nanoparticle-polymer composites revealed by diffraction experiments with slow neutrons. Existing and anticipated neutron-optical instrumentations based on holographic gratings are discussed.
