Towards greener organic chemistry : Direct electrophilic fluorination of carbonyl compounds in water and under solvent-free reaction conditions.

Selective fluorination of organic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds was achieved using the electrophilic fluorinating reagents SelectfluorTM F-TEDA-BF4 in aqueous medium or AccufluorTM NFSi (N-fluorobenzensulfonimide) under solvent-free reaction conditions (SFRC). Under both reaction conditions cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds were transformed into 2-fluoro substituted derivatives and acyclic analogues into 2,2-difluoro substituted compounds, while the reactions of 1-trifluoromethyl substituted 1,3-dicarbonyls in water resulted in the formation of 2,2-difluoro-3,3-dihydroxy-1-one derivatives.

Conversion of aryl iodides by an oxidative halogenation strategy using 30% aqueous hydrogen peroxide in fluorinated alcohol.

Oxidative chlorination with HCl/H2O2 in 1,1,1-trifluoroethanol was used to transform aryl iodides into aryliodine(III) dihalides. In this instance 1,1,1-trifluoroethanol is not only the reaction medium, but is also an activator of hydrogen peroxide for the oxidation of hydrochloric acid to molecular chlorine.

Optimisation of thermal-treatment of electrochromic nickel oxide thin films, their electrochromic properties and structural investigations.

This chapter represents a review of our work on nickel oxide. The main idea was to link the thermal analysis of thin films with the temperature-dependent electrochromic response of nickel oxide films. On the basis of isothermal TG analysis, films with different ratios between the thermally undecomposed amorphous phase and nanosized nickel oxide were prepared. Their electrochromic properties were tested with spectroelectrochemical measurements, while changes in their structure and morphology during thermal decomposition were followed using FT-IR, TEM, AFM, and EXAFS analysis.

Syntheses and a solid state structure of a dinuclear molybdenum(V) complex with pyridine.

As part of our ongoing research on oxomolybdenum(V) polynuclear species, X-ray structures of two compounds containing a prototype of a dinuclear {Mo2O4}2+ unit were determined: [Mo2O4Cl2Py4]•2.25Py and [Mo2O4Cl2Py4]•1.5PyHCl. Both were isolated from the reaction of the mononuclear [MoOCl4(H2O)]– ion with pyridine.

Electrochemical, optical and X-ray absorption studies of Ce/V mixed oxides thin films

We have continued studying CeO2 ion-storage films prepared by sol-gel method. Cyclovolthametry (CV), chronocoulometry (CPC) and different optic methods were used to determine properties of thin films. In collaboration with Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Maribor measurements of Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) of the prepared thin films were performed.
