Theoretical analysis for sensitivity enhancement in broad-band thermal lens microscope

A broadband three incoherent light source was introduced into thermal lens microscope to improve specificity. A three-layer theoretical model was built. Through numerical simulation it was found that at a usual 100 m sample length in micro-volumes, the sensitivity can be increased by approximately one order of magnitude at low frequencies when the top and bottom layers are organic solvents. The sensitivity is even higher than in the case of laser excited TLM.

Quantification of nitrocatechols and related aromatic compounds in atmospheric aerosols

In the last decade it was demonstrated that organic aerosol (OA) represents a significant fraction of ambient aerosol; a big portion of it is secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Biomass burning (BB) emits huge amounts of organic aerosols in the atmosphere; many different compounds can be present in BB aerosol. Some of these compounds are very specific to BB, thus they can be used as markers. An important class of compounds of SOA are nitrocatechols known as very strong absorbers of UV and Vis light. Very recently, methyl nitrocatechols were proposed as suitable tracers for highly oxidized secondary BBA. In the lecture at the European Aerosol Conference in Granada, Spain, our research on characterization of nitrocatechols and related compounds in ambient aerosols using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry was presented. A new method for the separation and identification of these compounds has been developed, further validated and applied for analysis or real atmospheric aerosols.
