Improved management of contaminated aquifers by the integration of source tracking, monitoring tools and decision strategies - INCOME

The INCOME project is intended for the establishment of an effective management of contaminated aquifers. The project connects procedures for discovering and supervising sources of pollution, and measures for improving the condition. The two primary objectives of the project are to develop an integrated decision making support system (DSS) for management of aquifers and the proposal of a feasible/accepted program of activities for sustainable management of extremely vulnerable “urban” groundwater in the alluvial aquifer below the highly urbanized area of the Municipality of Ljubljana.

In the year 2010 the work on Slovenian Water Management Plan for the Ministry for Environment and Spatial Planning was finished. It deals with integral water management policy, including the groundwater chemical and quantitative status estimation and proposal of measures for improvement of chemical and quantitative status of water bodies, which are at risk and they will not achieve good chemical and quantitative status till the year 2015. In the scope of Slovenian Water Management Plan, Geological Survey of Slovenia was responsible for groundwater management issues.

Application of SEM/EDS to environmental mineralogy and geochemistry

Possibilities of application of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive Xray spectrometry (EDS) to mineralogical and geochemical researches of metal polluted environmental media were the main topic of this PhD thesis. The application of SEM/EDS was shown on a case study of metal polluted Meža Valley, which has been a centre of Pb, Zn mining, ore processing and iron and steel based metallurgical industry for more than 300 years. Stream sediments, snow deposits and mine waste deposits from the Meža Valley were sampled and analysed as representative environmental media. Metal bearing phases in samples were characterised by their morphology, size and elemental compositions, measured with the EDS. These characteristics served as a basis for source apportionment of metal bearing phases, interpretation of their genesis and the assessment of their mineralogy and stability under given environmental conditions.

Whole day set of lectures for hydrogeologists in practice at the National Institute for the Environment in Budapest - Hungary.

In May 2012 dr. Mihael Brenčič, member of research group was invited lecturer at Eötvös Loránd University – Budapest Hungary at the Department of Physical and Applied Geology. In the frame of visiting professorship he presented lectures on karst hydrogeology to master and PhD students. During the visit in Budapest the event entitled "Short consultation on groundwater bodies" at National Institute for Environment, Budapest was organized. Inside this event he presented three lectures dedicated to results of his research in the past years, among them were investigations of transboundary water bodies and aquifers in Karavanke region, drinking water protection and analyses of the road influences on water resources. The whole day event was organized in cooperation with Hungarian national chapter of International Association of Hydrogeologist with the attendance from the whole Hungary.
