The paper presents an analysis of Lyotard's solution to the problem of the relationship between philosophy and scientific knowledge. The study takes two paths. On one hand, it tries to critically analyze the actuality of Lyotard'stheory on legitimacy. During this analysis the study exposes some of its weak points, especially regarding the status of ontology. On the other hand, the study proceeds through a return to Plato's original attempts to define knowledge through its separation from the simple opinion.
