The invention refers to a modified procedure for a preparation of optically transparent thin layers from TiO2/SiO2 colloidal solutions having photocatalytic as well as hydrophilic properties. The main emphases are: (i) simple preparation of the sol from non-toxic and cheap chemicals; (ii) simple way of depositing the sol to a substrate without additional thermal treatment; (iii) good proportion between the mechanical strength and photocatalytic properties of a thin layer; (iv) excellent optical transmission of the coating in the visible spectrum; (v) high hydrophilicity of the coating.
