1.
Vascular endothelial growth factor receptor-1 and placental growth factor as biochemical markers for prediction of complications in pregnancy

The study involved 341 pregnant woman of which 86 experienced complications (21 hypertensive disorders, 46 preterm delivery, 19 small for gestational age (SGA) babies). We found that increased VEGFR-1:PlGF ratio predicts SGA babies and preterm delivery (before the 32nd week). Decreased P1GF at 11-14 weeks are associated with hypertensive disorders and delivery of an SGA baby. VEGFR-1 has not been found to be an efficient marker for early screening of complications in pregnancy.

Prospective risk of stillbirth in monochorionic-diamniotic twin gestations: a population based study.

We analyzed the prospective risk of intrauterine death in 387 pairs of monochorionic diamniotic twins born in Slovenia between 1997 and 2007. We have found that a prospective risk for intrauterine death after the 33th gestational week is 6.2% ((95% CI, 4.2%–9.1%), which is more than in published studies based on the data of individual hospitals, whereas our study is based on the entire Slovene population. The fact is that population studies are rare in the literature, which gives our study a significant importance.

Detection and prevention of very preterm delivery

The consequences of very preterm delivery are severs for the baby, therefore the very preterm delivery has been recognized as one of the major problems of public health. The causes of preterm delivery are numerous and they are complex, thus, it is impossible to expect that a single procedure or medication would efficiently prevent its occurrence. Very preterm delivery usually occurs in women with no know risk factor. Here we described the available screening tests and possibilities for very preterm delivery prevention.
