The article deals with language diversity in ethnically mixed settings in Slovenia, discussing linguistic and educational policy as well as inhabitants' opinions regarding language diversity. It exposes economic variables strongly affecting the learning and use of minority language as the first and the second language.

Language policy for cultural and social cohesion

In the article the role of the language /education policy in relation to the economic processes in multilingual society is stressed . The right – adequate language/education policy contributes to the economic benefit of both- individual and society. Cooperation and exchange of knowledge and experiences, mobility of people and ideas are the key factors in promoting knowledge, achievements, common creative inspiration and cooperation in the process of forming a common European area of harmonious coexistence.

The Porabje/Raba region Slovenes and cross-border cultural cooperation – present situation and perspectives.

With national minorities, the possibility of preserving and promoting their cultural heritage is inseparably linked to the use of language. Education in one's mother tongue is essential, since without it there is no possibility of an equal development in minority culture. Any cultural activity is conditioned by adequate economic and social circumstances, as they provide suitable conditions and opportunities for cultural creativity and for participation of each individual in social life.

The role and the position of languages in the language market.

The contribution presents the goal of the research project which is to determine from both the theoretical and empiric standpoint the economical variables that mark the role and position of an individual language in language market in Slovenia, especially in ethnically mixed areas. The results of the project present the perception of management structures of the role of a language/language diversity which influences the development of human resources and social cohesion of the environment

Language learning: the case of the Slovene language

Multilingualism as policy and value is becoming the key of successful cooperation and coexistence in the contemporary world, and is closely linked with labour market. The border areas are characterized by processes of globalization and above all by currents of global economy in contemporary times. Border areas are part of the global market, and as a reaction to globalization, the significance of linguistic/ cultural diversity is increasing. In such conditions the command of minority language is becoming an added value to individuals and to society.
