ZIHERL, Saša, SUSMAN, Katarina, ČEPIČ, Mojca, PAVLIN, Jerneja, GLAŽAR, Saša A., VAUPOTIČ, Nataša. A teaching unit on liquid crystals.

The article reports the pilot module for teaching liquid crystals at the level of the higher secondary school. The module consists of experiments showing few basic phenomena that are met in liquid crystals as well few phenomena typical for liquid crystals that serve for illustration of the phenomena. They are: the phase transition, birefringence, and textures in liquid crystals).

2.
Member of the editorial board of European Journal of Liquid Crystals

European journal of physics is a journal, which discusses the problems of physics education at the university level. The role of the editorial members is, besides suggesting improvements or actualization of the journal, also refereeing the articles. Every member has to referee about twenty papers per year.

C.06 Editorial board membership

3.
Coordination of international projects FP6: POLLEN and FP7: FIBONACCI (Ana G Blagotinšek)

Ana G Blagotinšek is (was) responsible for coordination of FP6 project POLLEN and FP7 project FIBONACCI. The POLLEN project was declared as a model project in the Rocard report of the European Community. Both projects develop a set of resources needed for active learning appropriate for younger students. Stes can be borrowed by teachers that attended the training on active learning with the available resources.

4.
Sicentific secretary of Europena conference on liqui crystals and coordinator of section Liquid crystals in education (Mojca Čepič)

European conference on liquid crystals was organized in Maribor, from 6th to 11th February 2011. There were around 300 attendees that are active researchers in the field of liquid crystals. The section “Liquid crystals in education” was also organized, where researchers showed various ideas how to include liquid crystals in education. The most important contributors were members of our project. It was recognized that many researchers are interested in introduction of liquid crystals to education, however their activities are sporadic and effects of teaching are not rigorously evaluated.

SUSMAN, Katarina, PAVLIN, Jerneja, ČEPIČ, Mojca. It seems easy to float, but is it really? : a teaching unit for buoyancy.

The paper reports the teaching evaluation on the buoyancy at the lower secondary level. The teaching unit is based on inquiry approach. The paper is published in the proceeding of the international conference on physics education. GIREP proceedings have a strong refereeing process and they publish only one third of the submitted articles.
