MANDIĆ-MULEC, Ines, TURK, Valentina, MARINŠEK-LOGAR, Romana. Important achievements in the field of environmental microbiology in Slovenia

In this invited lecture also published as a review. The results of the project were presented with the emphasis on methodologies used to study the diversity of bacterial 16S rRNA and amoA genes in biofilms of Kaldnes carriers. In addition the results of ECD influence on activity and structure of ammoni oxidising bacteria were presented.

Genotoxic, co-genotoxic and potential carcinogenic activity of model organophosphorous pesticides

We showed that organophosphorous pesticides induce adverse effects in non-nervous systems. The most important findings are that low concentrations of OP induce genotoxic and mitogenic effects in HepG2 cells, that they change phosphorylation of kinases involved in stress response and change expression of genes involved in stress response leading to changes in basic cellular processes involved in cancer initiation, and that they enhance genotoxicity of BaP by favouring its metabolism toward the pathway of formation of o-quinones and reactive oxygen species.

Nitrification activity and community structure of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria in the bioreactors operated with addition of selected pharmaceuticals.

We showed that estrogens influence nitrification activity of microbial biofilms but not bacterial or nitrifier community structure. We also found high variability in nitrifier community structure on separate Kaldnes carriers which was comparable to temporal variability in microbial biofilms of industrial scale waste water treatment bioreactors and laboratory scale bioreactors treated with the real waste water or ammonium solution.

Critical evaluation of analytical procedures for organotin speciation in samples from the terrestrial environment

The deveolpment of analytical methods for the detemintaion of organotin compounds in samples from terrestrial environment is presented in doctoral thesis. Teir applicability to samples like sewage sludge is critically evaluated.
