From Balkanism to colonialism : The Western Balkans, Slovenia and EU

Invited lecture, University of Tokyo, 27.X.2008. Tokyo, 2008. The lecture outlines discursive patterns through which the image of the Western Balkan countries in the process of their EU accession is formed and mantained in Slovenia. It points out to the ways in which existing patterns, formed through history or by the EU institutions are reinterpreted, borrowed and maintained in specificaly Slovenian context.

'Nesting colonialisms' : new and old patterns of exclusion in the European periphery

Invited lecture at international conference "Inclusion and Exclusion in and on the Borders of Europe", Grand hotel Metropol, 6.-7.VI.2008, Portorož, 2008. It provided an analysis of political discourse referring to the process of EU accession of the countries of the “Western Balkans”, formed both within the EU institutions and by political elites in the European states.

The idea of Europe or Europe without ideas? : discourses on "the Western Balkans" as a mirror of modern European identity

Invited lecture at postgraduate study program "Kulturen der Differenz" Universität Wien, Institut für Geographie und Regionalforschung, 13.XI.2008, Vienna, 2008. The lecture highlights mechanisms through which the existing and easily recognizable patterns of exclusion, such as colonial discourse, are deployed in the new context, in which some countries are already members of the European Union while others strive for membership.
