Spontaneous growth of superstructure [alpha]-Fe[sub]2O[sub]3 nanowire and nanobelt arrays in reactive oxygen plasma.

To the best of uor knowledge, this paper represents the first report worldwide on synthesis of superstructure [alpha]-Fe[sub]2O[sub]3 nanowire and nanobelt arrays. We found that, under limited range of plasma parameters, one or two dimensional nanoparticles grow spontaneously from iron substrates during exposure to reactive oxygen plasma.

Long-range ordering of oxygen-vacancy planes in [alpha]-Fe[sub]2O[sub]3 nanowires and nanobelts.

Systematic research on interaction between oxygen plasma with different parameters and iron substrates brought an invention of a method for tailoring the structure of nanoparticles. We found that long-range ordering of oxygen-vacancy planes in [alpha]-Fe[sub]2O[sub]3 nanowires and nanobelts can be achieved by treatment of substrates heated to elevated temperature with a combination of neutral oxygen atoms and moderately accelerated positively charged ions.
