The synthesis of superparamagnetic barium hexaferrite particles

The basic principles enabling the hydrothermal synthesis of ultra-fine barium-hexaferrite nanoparticles were presented. The decrease in the size of the synthesised nanoparticles into the superparamagnetic range was only possible by decreasing the temperature of their formation. The knowledge related to the formation of the [Fe(OH)4]nn- complexes with a very large excess of (OH)- ions enabled a reduction of the nanoparticles’ formation temperature by more than 50 oC, thus enabling the synthesis of nanoparticles with sizes below 10 nm.

The hydrothermal synthesis and the properties of superparamagnetic BaFe12O19 nanoparticles were presented at an invited lecture. Special attention was given to the structural and magnetic properties of the nanoparticles.

Hydrothermal synthesis of barium hexaferrite nanoparticles

The hydrothermal method used for the synthesis of superparamagnetic BaFe12O19 nanoparticles was presented. The influence of different parameters of the synthesis procedure on the morphology, structural and magnetic properties of the nanoparticles was described. The synthesis of the superparamagnetic hexaferrite nanoparticles is important, both technologically for the development of new materials, and for basic research. It will enable basic research related to the influence of a size effect on the structure and magnetic properties of the hexaferrite.
