The lecture was a presentation of our study of the influence of self'generated volatiles on degradation of paper in an enclosure. Since our experiments were performed in closed vessels, the results are directlz comparable to storage of paper material in closed containers for the purpose of display or long-term storage.

We first identified volatiles emitted from paper and selected the volatile compounds, which were found to be emitted at higher concentrations accordingly, in order to study the effects of their presence on paper degradation. We found out that volatiles have an important effect on paper degradation, which is more pronounced in the case of papers with a lesser own emission of volatiles.
