Evaluation of spatial development of the Urban Municipality of Ljubljana - 3 Research projects

Environmental protection in the Ljubljana City Municipality is one of the three basic, but inequality treated spheres of sustainable urban development. Environmental analysis and comparison of the environmental state in the period 1990-2005 points out that the implementation of the guidelines, measures and projects would bring about more cases of exceeded pollution. Essential sustainable spatial challenges of cities policies in Ljubljana are to protect the underground water of Ljubljansko polje, to calm down the suburbanization processes and road transport within the environmental limits.

Applied research «Small stream improvements and measures to reduce their the flood risk in Ljubljana«; financed by Ljubljana City Municipality

The applied research results suggest the sustainable regulations of small streams which by flooding endanger especially the southern parts of Ljubljana City Municipality. These areas are recently transforming into residential districts. Natural conditions are causing high erosion as well as flood rates of small streams which can be regulated through sustainable measures but first of all they need to be considered in spatial planning as crucial environmental limitation. The research is an example of applied geography used to solve a problem identified by the municipality.
