At the Conference we have shown, that 6-phosphofructo-1-kinase can be posttranslationally modified during the transformation of normal human cellc into cancer cells. Highly active, citrate inhibition resistant shorter PFK1 fragment might trigger the Warburg effect in tumor cells.

LEGIŠA, Matic. Gene for enhancing primary metabolism.

At the 13th International Biotechnology Symposium and Exibition, that is held each four years, the use of the gene for synthesising the shorter fragment of 6-phosphofructo-1-kinase has been presented. The gene, while expressed in specific recipient organism causes the deregulation of metabolic flux through glycolysis which results in enhanced overall anabolic reactions in the cells. The gene might increase productivity and yields of various bio-products after insertion into commercial microorganisms.

LEGIŠA, Matic. A gene for enhancing primary metabolism and increasing productivities and yields.

At the Meeting “Science to Market” which was held as a part of the EPAB Conference in Hannover, the use of modified gene for the synthesis of a shorter 6-phosphofructo-1-kinase fragment that was protected by a patent has been presented. The gene might be used for enhancing the productivity of specific bio-products by various commercial microorganisms.

ŠOLAR, Tina. Regulation of metabolism at the level of 6-phosphofructo-1-kinase in filamentous fungus Aspergillus niger.

PhD Thesis of T. Šolar deals with the role of 6-phosphofructo-1-kinase (PFK1) from A. niger. A posttranslational modification of PFK1 enzyme has been described that resulted in formation of a highly active, citrate inhibition resistant shorter fragment. The modified enzyme was found to be activated to a higher level by specific activators in respect to the native enzyme, which caused deregulated metabolic flux through glycolysis. In the second part of her thesis T. Šolar showed that glucosamine-6-phosphate deaminase competed with PFK1 enzyme for the same substrate fructose-6-phosphate.
