Prof. Veronika Kralj-Iglič was a visiting professor at the University of Trieste, Department of Mathematics and Informatics for 3 months

Within the visit to University of Trieste we have elaborated a theory of mediated interactions between membranes which carry charges of the same sign. The mediating proteins were described as particles with spatially distributed charge which exhibit orientational ordering in the electric field. This effect provides the explanation for the observed attraction. In the description, we have introduced an exact consideration of the microscopic charge density which yielded an excellent agreement with computer simulations of the system.

Prof. Vernika Kralj-Iglič is a member of the editorial boad of The Open Autoimmunity Journal

The Open Autoimmunity Journal is a new journal which is devoted to the problems connected to autoimmune diseases. Prof. Kralj-Iglič accepted the invitation to join the editorial board and reviewed manuscripts while we have published a paper in this journal.

Prof. Kralj-Iglič was a principal investigator of the bilateral project with Republic Austria which was completed in 2009.

Within the Slovenian-Austrian bilateral project we have studied biologically relevant nonlamellar lipid phases. The structural data on these phases were obtained by X-ray scattering performed at sinchrotrone in Trieste by Austrian colleagues. Our group contributed an original theory based on orientational ordering of lipid molecules in the plane of the monolayer. The theory provided the explanation for the transition from the lamellar phase to the inverted hexagonal phase which takes place due to the increase of the temperature.

Foundation of the research laboratory "Laboratory of Clinical Biophysics"

In 2007, a research group "Laboratory of Clinical Biophysics" was founded at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ljubljana with the aim to link biophysical methods with clinically important problems. Since the mediated interaction between membranes is clinically important, the work within this project can be regarded as relevant in this respect.
