The silicon photomultiplier is a new type of photo-sensor with high efficiency for detection of photons but also a large rate of noise signals - around 1MHz/mm2, that are equal to signals of a single photon. We have demonstrated for the first time that such a sensor can be used successfully as a photon detector in RICH counters.

Inside spectrometers with limited space, the proximity focusing RICH with aerogel radiator can be used for particle identifiction. In recent years we introduced a new type of such a detector with multi-layer aerogel radiator. The paper describes the method for optimization of refractive indices of individual layers to minimize the error of Cherenkov angle measurement.
