Martina OŽBOT: Editor of an international monograph.

The monograph comprises about 40 peer-reviewed contributions by researchers from different European countries and presents the results of original research on the translation of texts from the first half of 20th century. The book is unique in its overall approach to the topic and in the findings presented in its various contributions. The authors deal with different issues concerning the translation of texts of different national literatures into Slovene and into other languages as well as from Slovene into English and Italian.

Janez OREŠNIK: The Zois Award for life-time achievements (2007).

Janez Orešnik, member of the Slovene Academy of Arts and Sciences, was presented with the Zois award for life-time achievements in linguistics. As a professor at Ljubljana University he has introduced Scandinavian linguistic studies to Slovenia and contributed to the development of general linguistic studies with a special emphasis on Slovene. He promoted the research on generative grammar, while at the same time not neglecting sociolinguistic and in particular lanuage-planning issues. His work comprises over 250 publications, eight of which are scholarly monographs.

Branka KALENIĆ RAMŠAK/Jasmina MARKIČ: Organizers of an international conference

On 23rd and 24th November 2005 an international conference marking 400 years since the publication of Don Quixote by Cervantes was held at the Faculty of Arts in Ljubljana. Don Quixote, the first European novel, raises important questions to be addressed not only by literary historians and theoreticians, but also by linguists (the history of the Spanish language, narratology, translation studies). The conference brought together distinguished scholars from eight European countries (Spain, Austria, Denmark, France, Italy, Hungary, Germany and Slovenia).

Martina OŽBOT: Guest lecturer at the University of Trieste and the University of Rome (La Sapienza) in 2004/05, 2005/06 and 2007/08.

In the lectures, which were intended for students of Italian language and literatue, of Slavic languages and literatures as well as of other language-related courses, attention was given to some fundamental aspects and elements of a general functionally oriented translation theory and to the main problems of Slovene-Italian and Italian-Slovene translation. Theoretical and descriptive issues discussed were illustrated on the basis of authentic texts in both languages.

Parlons slovene is the first language textbook (with CD-ROM) for comprehensive learning of Slovene, aimed particularly at French speakers. It offers an overview of all levels of the Slovene language structure and devotes special attention to the development of the learner’s practical communicative competence. Since no bilingual French-Slovene and Slovene-French dictionary for French-speaking users is available yet, the textbook also includes a relatively extensive and informative word list.
