P4-0092 — Final report
1.
Guest editor of the journal - International Journal of Environment and Pollution (IJEP)

Dr. Nevenka Kožuh Eržen, was a guest editor of a Special Issue – Ecotoxicology, Environmental Chemistry and Food Safety. The issue contained 21 original scientific papers, reviewed by at least two international experts. This special issue fitted with the research programme, what enabled exclusive promotion of the performed scientific work inside the programme. Especially, ecotoxicology, as a new field developing during the duration of the programme, was well presented in the papers and through that also to a broader scientific public. The special Issue was published in 2007 (Vol. 31, Nr. 1-2).

Managing and co-ordination of the technological project “Technology for safety and peace 2006-2012”

Projects deals with long-lasting effects of short-term exposure to low concentrations of organophosphates, during war or terrorist actions or possible chemical accident. Researchers study possible degradation and behaviour of substances in different environments (laboratory, field) and ecotoxicological data are collected (soil and aquatic invertebrates). The main goal of this project is development of an “easy to use” field device, which will be based on biosensor technology.

Foundation of research centre, laboratory, study, association together with D.05: Accreditation of the laboratory

On the VF we constitute in frame of NVI in period of length of the RP 28 National reference laboratories (NRL), for the field of individual contagious diseases, quality and safety of foodstuffs of animal origin and fodders of animals. Such structure placed our laboratories amongst the highest state laboratories of EU. Establishment and appointment of NRL was arranged with preliminary accreditation ISO/IEC 17025. Besides that we established the first level III. laboratory in Slovenia. L. for molecular diag. of bacteria and L. for forensic toxicology and ecotoxicology were also established.

4.
Transfer of existent technologies, knowledge, methods and of procedures to practice

We implemented methods for detection of viruses of classical swine fever, cattle viral diarrhoea, viral diseases of fish, equine viral arteritis, avian influenza, Newcastle disease and bird anaemia in poultry, norovirus and hepatitis A virus in clams. We introduced molecular methods for diagnostics of bacterial and protozoan diseases in fish, Q fever and tularemia, E. coli O157 and MRSA. Genotyping procedures were introduced for Listeria monocytogenes, Salmonella sp., E. coli, Campylobacter coli and C. jejuni, Staphylococcus aureus and Taylorella equigenitalis.

5.
Development of new health/diagnostic methods/procedures

In the scope of the program we developed (i) new diagnostic methods for detection of pestiviruses, avian influenza viruses, contagious poultry bronchitis virus, virus of equine arteritis and Koi herpes virus in fish; (ii) quick molecular procedures for reliable detection of some bacterial bio-terroristic agents in environmental samples, water and air; (iii) new methods for detecting residues of different environmental pollutants and veterinary medicines in feeding-stuff and food of animal origin. This enabled more efficient control and assurance of safe feeding-stuff and food of animal origin.
