Degradation of AlN powder in aqueous environments

The paper describes the results of an extensive research on reactivity of aluminium nitride powder in aqueous environments, which point out the possibilities for the control and preventing the hydrolysis of the AlN powder as well as its exploatation in the HAS forming process. The kinetics of the hydrolysis reactions and their influence on the structure and morphology of solid reaction products was investigated. This research has made an important contribution to better understanding of the mechanisms and kinetics of the reactions between the AlN powder and water.

The strength and hydrothermal stability of Y-TZP ceramics for dental applications

In this paper we present the results of the investigations, where we evaluated and explained the influence of grinding and sand-blasting on bending strength and mechanical fatique of Y-TZP ceramics for dental applications. We were the first to show the influence of surface treatment on mechanical properties and the reliability of the dental Y-TZP ceramics, thus making an important contribution to further development of this material for dental applications.

The preparation and properties of Al2O3-ZrO2 composites with corrugated microstructures

The composites were fabricated with the use of the deformation processing method. This process is based on the repeated rolling and folding of green multilayered composites from ceramic pastes. The influence of processing parameters on the microstructure and mechanical proeprites of sintered bodies were investigated. It was discovered that using this process the strength of these composites can be significantly improved due to corrugation of the layers after repeated rolling and folding of initially flat layers.

Preparation and properties of C/C-SiC nano-composites

The aim of our work was to develop a composite that will combine good fracture toughness and good oxidation and abrassion ressitance. The possibilities for the preparation of C/C-SiC composites with gradient structure of the ceramic matrix, from carbon in the core to SiC on the surface. The use of various polymeric precursors was studied and the structure, interactions between the components and thermomechanical proeprties were investigated.

Optimization of the Bend Strength of Flat-Layered Alumina-Zirconia Composites

The effective bending strength of the flat-layered composites were theoretically analysed taking into account residual thermal stresses due to different thermal expansion coeficients of the layers. It was shown that by an appropriate design of the composition and thickness of the layers it is possible to increase teh effective strength of these technologically important composites by a factor of 2, as compared to monolithic ceramics.
