This book represents a new important step towards the preservation of a favourable status of the marine ecosystem in the northernmost part of the Mediterranean.

Electronic conference had very good participation (1250 participants) from 46 countries. During the course of electronic conference the hits on web page were 41.723, and conference contributed significantly to the contents of two EU 6. FP projects (IP SESAME and Network of Excellence MarBEF) to which we became partners.

COBISS.SI-ID: 18488793The accurate assessment of marine environment state will greatly improve our abilities to predict the anthropogenic impacts on ecosystems. We developed the field observing system at sea with data transmissioin to MBS as well as the methodologies for ecological status assessment. In 2006-2008 a new observing system at sea and system for data transmission were established (near real-time data available at www.buoy.mbss.org). In parallel we developed and internationally calibrated new methodologies for assessment and monitoring of the ecological status as required by the EU WFD.

COBISS.SI-ID: 1922383Members of programme team were involved in numerous outreach and public dissemination activities writing popular science articles, participating at events on radio, TV, giving interviews, producing DVD and other outreach materials. We received EUSCEA award for “Is sea still breathing? Thieves of sea, mirrors of stars” and participation in WONDERS, European Science Festival in Madrid, Spain. For excellent science communication we received SZF “The Prometheus of Science” award.
