Historical iron gall ink containing documents – properties affecting their condition

In 2005 the InkCor project ended which was financially supported by the 5. EU framework programme. Our contribution consisted of an extended analysis of the iron gal ink patches on the historical documents. Using the external proton beam of the Tandetron accelerator and detecting x-ray spectra emitted from the target we have nondestructively analysed about 100 original documents which form an essential part of the slovenian cultural heritage.

X International Conference on Particle-induced X-ray Emission and its Analytical Applications, 4 - 8. june 2004, Ljubljana - Portorož

Under initiative of prof. dr. M. Budnar we have organized 10th PIXE conference (X International Conference on Particle-induced X-ray Emission and its Analytical Applications) which was attended by more than 100 researchers from all overthe world. 4 - 8. june 2004, Ljubljana - Portorož (http://pixe2004.ijs.si/);

EXAFS and XANES study of arsenic in contaminated soil.

In collaboration with Camborne School of Mines, University of Exeter, Cornwall, UK, Nova Gorica University, National Institute of Chemistry and Jožef Stefan Institute (PSP21-2005) we have performed and published a soil analysis from Cornwall region in southwest England, which is polluted with very high concentration of arsenic (1000 pm and more).

Localisation and quantification of elements within seeds of Cd/Zn hyperaccumulator Thlaspi praecox by micro-PIXE.

A micro-PIXE technique allows quantitative mapping of elements in biological samples down to concentrations of the order 1 µg/g of the dry tissue. In collaboration with BF we have studied the mechanisms of hyperaccumulation and tolerance to Zn and Cd of Thlaspi Praecox Wulfen plant, which grows in the strongly polluted mine environment of Žirovski vrh.

Port of Koper - elemental concentrations in aerosols by PIXE.

From 2002 on we are regularly performing PIXE analysis of aerosol particle samples taken at the open bulk terminal of Port of Koper. For the purpose of non-stop sampling we have developed a sampling and analysis technique for small particles (PM10) captured onto quartz filters which allows a simultaneous determination of the total particle mass. On the basis of our analysis we have discovered a strong correlation between Fe aerosol concentration and ship unloading activities.
