P1-0055 — Final report
1.
Initiating new study program

Researchers on the program participated actively in the Bologna reform of higher education in Slovenia. We designed curricula for a range of physics and biophysics courses and were engaged in preparation of 7 new Bachelor and Master programs. Members of the program teach in 33 study programs at Faculty of Mathematics and Physics, Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Education, and Biotechnical Faculty at UL and Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Faculty of Education, Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Health Sciences at UM.

Administrative appointments

Most prominent administrative office was that of Prof. N. Vaupotič, which was head of the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Education UM from October 2004 until December 2007, head of the Department of Physics at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (FNSM) UM from January 2007 until October 2007, and since October 2007 she is dean of the FNSM UM. She was one of the initiators of the new FNSM UM. She was honored by the Silver Medal of University of Maribor and the Prometheus of Science Prize awarded by the Slovene Scientific Foundation.

International collaborations

International impact of the members of the program contributes to the global regard for science in Slovenia. Prof. Podgornik is a visiting scientist at the National Institutes of Health (USA) and was a visiting professor at the Kavli Institute of Theoretical Physics, University of California Santa Barbara. Prof. Čepič has repeatedly visited University Sains Malaysia (Malaysia) where she co-supervised 1 Master and 1 PhD student. During the period 2004-2008, members of the program gave a total of 46 invited lectures at international conferences and 67 at foreign universities and institutes.

Editorial work

Program members serve on editorial boards of several international scientific journals (Phys Rev E; J Biol Phys; Eur J Phys; BioSystems; PMC Biophysics), and of national journals (Presek, Fizika v šoli, Proteus). We contribute also as reviewers of many high-impact scientific journals (Phys Rev E, Biophys J, Phys Rev Lett, Eur Phys J and others). Dr. P. Ziherl was nominated as a member of the inaugural group of outstanding referees selected by the quality and timeliness of the reports of scientists who have reviewed manuscripts for American Physical Society publications over the past 20 years.

Applicative results

Dr. J. Derganc and collaborators developed a novel device for automated analysis of cells with a broad clinical potential. The researchers were granted a US patent. Dr. R. Podgornik was awarded the Martin Hirschorn IAC Best Paper Award. The award was granted for his work on noise reduction in drying machines carried out in collaboration with Gorenje d.d. The collaboration with Clinical department of rheumatology at the University Medical Center Ljubljana resulted in a better understanding of the immunology of rheumatism. In 2007, dr. M. Mally was awarded the Krka Prize for her PhD thesis.
