Cholera epidemics in Istria

In the context of the coronavirus outbreak, the contribution comparatively presents the characteristics of the cholera epidemic, which has severely impacted the coastal towns in Istria during the 19th century. The author presents the scale of the epidemic, the reasons that contributed to the spread of the disease, and the preventive measures taken at the time. The socio-economic situation in the town communities, absence of systematic welfare provisions and the lack of knowledge about the characteristics of the disease made a decisive contribution to the spread of the disease.

From the history of epidemics in the Littoral

The article presents selected examples of epidemics that had not only severe demographic consequences in the Littoral, but also perceptible social and economic results. Especially in cases of recurrence of epidemic crises at shorter intervals, they also provoked the need to adjust the social mechanisms by which society otherwise responded to these changes. The paper also emphasizes that confronting existential crises is a recurring theme in human history; in the context of the current crisis situation, it therefore makes sense to deal historiographically with these issues.
