Geographical mapping of visitor flow in tourism

The available technology enables us to access a large amount of data shared by tourists on tourism web platforms. Such data include the exact geographical location visited, the time of a visit, and the identifier of a visitor. This article aims to identify the visitor flows in the North East Adriatic region. Visitor flows are groups of repetitive movements of visitors through the geographical space within a certain travel. We identified 31 groups of strategic visitor flows between 188 destinations in the region. The proposed methodological approach is unique and had not been used in this context before. By connecting new approaches in destination management and economic planning, we aim to improve the theoretical and practical knowledge in this field.

Challenges in tourism sector: how European tourism destinations are dealing with over tourism

Tourism is considered as an important source of economic growth, regional development and employment; however tourism sector faces considerable challenges. The growth of tourism and the influx of tourists in densely populated areas, impacts upon: the spatial quality, gentrification, lowering housing offers by increasing rents and real estate prices, lowering the quality of life of local residents, among others. We aimed at carrying out a research on the ability of selected European destinations to overcome the challenges of overtourism. We have developed a methodology for diagnostics of overtourism, which is based on four steps: 1) quantitative description of the destination, 2) qualitative description of the emerging challenges, 3) qualitative description of the measures taken by the destinations, and 4) qualitative description of the responses to the implementation of the measures. We found out that even though many similar challenges can be found in the destinations studied, as a result of overtourism, it is necessary to identify measures for each destination or each destination type addressing individual challenges.

Residents' attitudes towards overtourism from the perspective of tourism impacts and cooperation - the case of Ljubljana

This paper combines the existing sustainability–responsibility tourism framework from academic research with current industry research on overtourism in order to propose a sustainable tourism impact and stakeholder cooperation based on the overtourism risk monitoring model. Research has confirmed some impact factors that negatively influence the satisfaction of local residents with tourism presence. Furthermore, it has been confirmed that increased cooperation mitigates the negative perceptions of residents on tourism presence. In its present form, the proposed monitoring model can be used to examine the overtourism situation and to inform sustainable tourism policy and management for every destination.

The purpose is to analyse the tourism size in Slovenia from the perspective of economic sustainability, and to contribute to economic and socio-political consensus and policy for acceptable tourism size and growth. The author assumes that Slovenian tourism falls into a category of unsustainable under-tourism, because its size and economic indicators are far below the competitors from the region.
