In this manuscript the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) in Slovenia, their interrelatedness and socio-demographic background are presented. More than three-quarters of the participants experienced at least one ACE, and more than one quarter had four or more ACEs. The most frequently reported ACEs were emotional abuse and physical abuse. In line with previous studies, the results showed that different ACEs often co-occur and are more common in families with low socioeconomic status. Previous studies have shown the significant impact of ACEs on the physical, mental and social functioning of people throughout their lives, underlying the importance of addressing ACEs with comprehensive national strategy and implementation plans in the relevant sectors.

In the chapter of the scientific edited monograph we define the concept of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), as well as resilience, present basic data from the first Slovenian research on the incidence of ACEs and socio-demographic factors influencing them, as well as key forms of systemic support and prevention. We highlight in particular the community approaches, based on partnerships of different stakeholders at the local level, to reduce the harmful effects of trauma and strengthen resilience, which can be implemented in all, and especially in deprived and vulnerable communities.
