In this article, we draw attention to the importance of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) as risk factors for the occurrence and development of diseases in adulthood. Odds ratios for selected health outcomes (physical, mental) in individuals with four or more ACEs are presented. Slovenian research, similar to existing studies, showed a significantly higher risk of many chronic diseases and mental disorders in this population.
F.22 Improvement to existing health/diagnostic methods/procedures
COBISS.SI-ID: 30897667The paper presents data from the first Slovenian research on the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences and the relationship between these experiences and selected indicators of mental health and mental disorders (self-assessment of mental health, life satisfaction, diagnosed and self-diagnosed mental disorders, therapeutic assistance). We relate to global debates about the need to introduce complex post-traumatic stress disorder as a psychiatric diagnostic category, as well as to modern approaches to trauma treatment.
F.30 Professional assessment of the situation
COBISS.SI-ID: 36640861At the end of the project, we prepared a short professional publication on the key findings of the research, which is available to the interested public in electronic form. In it, we highlighted the main findings and guidelines for addressing the topic.
F.17 Transfer of existing technologies, know-how, methods and procedures into practice
COBISS.SI-ID: 19263491At the beginning of the project, we published an article on the topic in the Saturday supplement of Delo - the largest Slovenian newspaper (September 1, 2018). We highlighted the concept of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), summarized the main findings of existing foreign studies, the mechanisms of how ACEs are translated into different outcomes, and the main trends in addressing this issue.
F.17 Transfer of existing technologies, know-how, methods and procedures into practice
COBISS.SI-ID: 358234533.5-hour presentation of the results and guidelines for addressing the issue at an online professional meeting at the end of research, Ljubljana, 10 June 2020. The results were presented by all members of the project team. The presentation was attended by 350 participants, until 11 May 2021 we recorded 1183 views of the online recording of the presentation.
